Common Sunscreen Myths and Facts

1 min read

Myth: darker skin does not need sunscreen

All skin tones are affected by sunlight over time, even if the degree differs. Sunscreen benefits every skin type and tone in the long run.

Myth: a cloudy day means no sunscreen is needed

A large share of the rays passes through clouds, so cloudy weather does not automatically mean enough protection.

Fact: the amount you use matters as much as the SPF

Using too little sunscreen reduces its real effectiveness even if the SPF on the bottle is high. Applying enough to cover your whole face matters more than the number alone.

Fact: reapplying is necessary

Sunscreen gradually loses effectiveness with time, sweat and rubbing from clothes or towels. Reapplying every few hours, especially during long sun exposure, keeps you protected.

Fact: makeup alone is usually not enough

Even if your foundation contains SPF, the amount used in makeup is usually less than what is recommended for real protection, so it is better to wear a separate sunscreen underneath.

These are general tips. For persistent skin or hair concerns, please see a dermatologist.
