Two main types of exfoliation
Physical exfoliation uses grains or a tool to buff the skin's surface, while chemical exfoliation uses ingredients that dissolve dead skin cells without rubbing. Each type is used differently.
Physical exfoliation needs a gentle touch
If you choose a physical exfoliant, pick one with fine grains and use very light movements, because scrubbing hard can cause tiny scratches or irritation.
Moderate frequency is best
Most skin types only need exfoliating once or twice a week. Daily or very frequent exfoliation can weaken the natural skin barrier instead of improving its look.
Watch how your skin reacts
If you notice ongoing redness or extra sensitivity after exfoliating, that is a sign to reduce how often you do it or change the product.
Moisturiser and sunscreen matter even more afterwards
Right after exfoliating, skin is more sensitive to external factors, so good moisturising and daytime sunscreen become more important than ever.
These are general tips. For persistent skin or hair concerns, please see a dermatologist.
