How to Choose the Right Foundation Shade for Your Skin

Test the shade along your jawline

If you are in a beauty store and want to try a shade before buying, swipe a thin line along your jawline, since it is the closest match to your neck and body. Avoid testing on the back of your hand, as it is usually a different colour from your face.

Use natural daylight

Artificial store lighting can change how colours look. If you can, step into daylight or near a window for a minute and check whether the shade blends into your skin without a visible line.

Pay attention to undertone, not just depth

Two shades of the same lightness can look completely different if their undertones differ (warm, cool or neutral). If a foundation looks grey or ashy on you, try a shade with a warmer undertone.

Remember the result is always approximate

Even after the quiz or an in-store test, screens and lighting differ from real life. It is always best to try a small sample before buying the full bottle.
